Kilcock Spring Clean

Our Spring Clean-up took place on Saturday 10th April and we were delighted to see such a huge participation by so many in the community. We had lots of helpers including from the GAA, St Coca's Athletic club, Canoe Polo Club, and lots of other volunteers. You were all amazing.

We had planned out all the areas in the town from Spin Bridge to the end of Millarstown, Clane roundabout through the town all the way to the Musgraves roundabout, All around the Sli na Slainte of Laragh, lots of the Estates, the Greenway and the canal itself was also cleaned. We had coordinators for each area and for Covid 19 reasons had organised all the volunteers to go to their designated areas and work there so that we avoided any gathering.

St Coca's did a great job cleaning up all the ditches around Laragh. They had done a clean-up of this area last year where hundreds of bags of rubbish were taken from the ditches. It was disappointing to see the ditches with a lot of rubbish again.

We had some great help on the canal with two canoeists from the Canoe Polo club helping us get those bits of litter that were out of reach from land.

Other than a shopping trolley found in the canal and some other strange looking items pulled from ditches a lot of the litter was plastic bottles, cans, coffee cups - all either recyclable or compostable when clean, but when dirty have to go into landfill.

We would encourage everyone to stop buying single use plastic - our planet cannot survive it, bring a drink from home in a re-usable bottle. If you have to buy a drink then bring your bottle or can home to recycle it. Recycling is free - dumping your litter has a terrible cost on our future. Most of our coffee shops will take re-usable coffee cups and give a discount if you use your own cup - so do yourself a favour and get yourself a re-usable cup that you love to use.
